We're Off!!!!

Ready or not, we're off to Europe!

The cats thought that the luggage was loads of fun to play on.

Picking up our bags at the airport in London after two very long flights. There is an 8 hour time difference between home and London, so our eating and sleeping schedules are a bit messed up.

Learning Russian Phrases - Yikes!

In preparation for the trip to St. Petersburg, we are attempting to learn a few Russian key words/phrases.

Russian is written using the Cyrillic alphabet. While some number of letters are written and pronounced as in English (A, K, M, O, and T), other letters are written using the Roman alphabet but are pronounced differently, i.e. Y/y is pronounced 'oo' as in food and X/x is pronounced 'ch' as in the word 'lock.'

Below is a link to a list of some English to Russian common phrases.

St. Petersburg Hotel Finally Found!

It looks like we're staying at the Pribaltiyskaya Hotel in St. Petersburg. With the G8 conference going on, it was difficult to find a place to stay. Apparently, some of the local residents are being asked to give up their homes & apartments so some of the G8 folks can have places to stay.

2006 Baltic Captials Cruise Threatened by G8 Summit

Strange things tend to happen to us when we travel. Sometimes, they start to happen before the trip has even started.

This July, we are planning to spend some time in London & then take a cruise through the various Baltic Captials. It's our big 40th birthday celebration and we are extremely fortunate to have this travel opportunity.

Unfortunately, security has been increased in preparation for the G8 Summit Conference in St. Petersburg, Russia. This was announced a few days ago. Because of this, our cruise line has had to drastically change the itinerary. Instead of spending more time in the various Baltic captials, it looks like there will be more days at sea instead.

While this is not necessarily the cruise line's fault (they worked hard to not cancel the cruise entirely), it is a bit disappointing.

Fortunately, we will still get the opportunity to visit the following Baltic Captials/European Locations:

Because we are not too thrilled with spending multiple days at sea while in Europe, we are looking into other travel options. Right now, it looks like we may:
    • Get off of the ship in St. Petersburg & stay there a few extra days.
    • Fly off to either London or Paris for an extra day or so.
    • Fly home.

We had the opportunity to travel to NYC for a long weekend last November.

Spamalot was one of the Broadway plays we had tickets to.

Our hotel was literally in Times Square.

Radio City Music Hall was already decorated for the holiday season.
